John Matlock
Mr. John Matlock, 86, of Cameron, passed away at his residence on Monday, Jan. 17, 2022.
Graveside services for Mr. Matlock will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the Oak Hill Cemetery Pavilion with Minister Gene Van Noord officiating.
John was born July 15, 1935, in McCrory, Ark., to Morris and Bessie (Watkins) Matlock. He was a graduate of Augusta, Ark., High School, and from Arkansas State University with a masters degree in education. While playing for the Arkansas State Indians he set, and still holds, the school rebound record. Immediately after college, John began his coaching career as basketball coach at Augusta High School, leading the team to several state championships.
John then went into administration, becoming the principal of Augusta Elementary School. He went on to become High School Principal at Augusta High School and then Des Arc, Ark., High School. John retired while he was principal of O. J. Thomas Junior High School in Cameron. He touched and molded thousands of lives during his time in education and coaching.
Survivors include: his wife, Dee Matlock of Cameron; son, Randy Matlock and wife, Kristi, of College Station; and daughters, Pat Foster and husband, Jim, of Cameron, and Susie Hetzel and husband, Rod, of Waco. Also surviving are four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Mary, in 2006.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial in John’s memory, to Wounded Warriors, Habitat for Humanity, or the charity of your choice.
